Using the Basic Teradata Query Reference Content

Basic Teradata Query (BTEQ) is a general-purpose, multi-platform commandline client utility that enables ad hoc and batch submission of Structured Query Language (SQL) requests to one or more instances of Analytics Database. It is typically used for report generation and lower-volume data load/unload. BTEQ formats the query results and returns them to the screen or to one or more files.

Why Would I Use this Content?

This content explains how to work with BTEQ sessions to execute database requests that are expressed in Teradata Structured Query Language (SQL). These statements enable users to perform actions against database objects such as:
  • Define data – create and modify data structures
  • Select data – query a database
  • Manipulate data – insert, delete, and update data
  • Create SQL macros – store and execute sequences of statements as a single operation
  • Control data – define databases and users, establish privileges, and secure data

How Do I Use this Content?

These instructions are for System administrators and Database administrators. Because much of this document is focused on client channels, networks, and mainframe-attached and workstation-attached computers, you should be familiar with the operations of your mainframe-attached or workstation-attached clients and the systems installed on them.

How Do I Get Started?

To use BTEQ, access to the following systems are required:
  • The client system running BTEQ
  • Vantage

The following table describes typical system access requirements.

System Required Other Requirements
The client system Valid userid and password Additional user identifiers might be required.
Vantage Valid database userid and password An account identifier (acctid), a Teradata Director Program Identifier (tdpid), or both, may be required.
