Teradata software uses the following naming conventions:
- Release number
- SYSMOD name
The release number is commonly used in user-facing documents and general communication regarding Teradata software. It is in the following form:
For example, for major release 17.00 for Teradata® Tools and Utilities, the first maintenance release would be named Teradata® Tools and Utilities Release 17.00.01.
The SYSMOD name identifies the level of Teradata software. The conventions for this number vary depending on the content of the software that is shipped:

| Maintenance Software (PTF) | A SYSMOD name can indicate a maintenance software upgrade (PTF). PTF numbers refer to the Teradata maintenance software. The PTF number always begins with the letter P, followed by six alphanumeric characters. For example, a PTF number could be PW20005. |
| Emergency Fix (APAR) | A SYSMOD name also can indicate an emergency fix (APAR). An APAR number consists of two letters and a five digit number that corresponds to the discrepancy report (DR) number. For example, the number of the APAR that contains the fix to the problem reported in DR 39160 would be QW39160. |
