Connecting Teradata Advanced SQL Engine from Non-Teradata Sources

Teradata offers the following tools to connect Teradata Advanced SQL Engine from non-Teradata sources.

Connect from Non-Teradata Sources Tool Description
Advanced SQL Engine from:
  • Presto
  • Apache Hive1
  • Apache Spark SQL1
  • Oracle (only as a target connector)
Teradata QueryGrid A data analytics fabric providing seamless, high-performing data access, processing, and movement across one or more data sources.
Hadoop:
  • Cloudera Distribution for Hadoop (CDH)
  • Hortonworks Data Platform (HDP)
  • MapR
  • Amazon EMR
Use TPT or Teradata Studio to run Teradata Connector for Hadoop (TDCH) to move data between Hadoop and the SQL Engine. TDCH can also be used without TPT or Teradata Studio.

Use TPT to move data between the Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS) and Teradata without using the TDCH interface.

TDCH is a set of APIs and tools supporting high performance parallel bi-directional data movement between the SQL Engine and the Hadoop ecosystem of products.

ODBC-compliant data sources Teradata Parallel Transporter (TPT) TPT uses embedded ODBC drivers from DataDirect to move data from non-Teradata databases to the SQL Engine.
ODBC: Standard API ODBC Driver for Teradata Use to connect C/C++ applications to the SQL Engine.
JDBC: Standard API Teradata JDBC Driver Use to connect Java applications to the SQL Engine.
.NET: Standard API .NET Data Provider for Teradata Use to connect .NET applications to the SQL Engine.
SQL Driver for Python Use to access the SQL Engine from Python scripts and programs.
SQL Driver for R teradatasql for R Use to access the SQL Engine from R scripts and programs.
IBM Mainframe Teradata Tools and Utilities (TTU) Mainframe Utilities Suite

TTU software that supports mainframe has information in their respective documentation.

Use to access the SQL Engine from MVS, CICS and IMS environments.
1Apache Hive and Apache Spark are certified against Hive and Spark versions running in certified versions of Hadoop distributions. Teradata QueryGrid is not certified against the Apache Hive or Apache Spark standalone versions unless specified otherwise. See the compatibility matrix at Teradata QueryGrid Compatibility Matrix.

Teradata Vantage™ is our flagship analytic platform offering, which evolved from our industry-leading Teradata Database. Until references in content are updated to reflect this change, the term Teradata Database is synonymous with Teradata Vantage. Advanced SQL Engine is a core capability of Teradata Vantage, based on our best-in-class Teradata Database. Advanced SQL refers to the ability to run advanced analytic functions beyond that of standard SQL.
