Which components your Database Engine 20 needs depends on how many departments, applications, or projects you want it to support.

Database for Single Department, Application, or Project

A database for a single department, application, or project might need a single primary cluster or a single compute cluster.

With a compute cluster, you must move at least one table in the query from primary cluster block storage to object storage. Doing so ensures compute cluster usage and reduces storage cost.

Database for Multiple Departments, Applications, or Projects

If your database is to support multiple departments, applications, or projects, you must determine the number and characteristics of the compute clusters that each needs and create Compute Group Statements.

Teradata recommends a single database, not a separate database for each department, application, or project.

In a single database, all data (on the primary cluster and in object storage) is accessible to a diverse set of applications and workloads.

With multiple databases, data must be duplicated, increasing management overhead.
