The Preinstall Preparation step performs procedures that are necessary prior to installing packages.
The following table lists the procedures that are run (if applicable) by the Preinstall Preparation step.

| Optional Removal of Old Kernel | If a kernel package is being installed, you are given the option to automatically remove the oldest installed kernel. This is only performed if more than one kernel is already installed. | Choose whether to remove the oldest kernel. |
| Preinstallation Scripts | If a major upgrade is being performed, a set of scripts is run to validate the state of the system prior to upgrade. | Enter the dbc username and password. |
