Use VM&F to upgrade Linux Teradata Warehouse systems to achieve higher levels of system availability during software upgrades.

PUT supports VM&F upgrades. However, PUT does not set up VM&F partitions for you. PUT assumes that VM&F is set up and functional on your systems.

VM&F supports applying software upgrades to an Alternate Boot Environment (ABE) while the database is accessible. The ABE is a copy of the current, active boot environment (the Primary Boot Environment, or PBE). When the software load is complete, the system is directed to the ABE and rebooted, invoking the upgraded software image. Prior to TW 6.0, the software upgrade was performed while the database was offline.

If the upgrade fails (for example because of regression or performance), the system can be returned to its original, preupgrade software image by directing the system to the previous BE and rebooting.

Teradata upgrades that include data conversions require a data backup and subsequent data restoration as part of the system recovery process.
