AWS provides a reliable, highly available backup and restore mechanism. The mechanism is known as EBS Snapshot. EBS is a general purpose block-level storage solution, and consequently the EBS Snapshot is also a general purpose backup and restore solution.

The EBS Snapshot is an incremental backup solution by design, in the sense that every time a snapshot is taken, only the blocks that have changed since the previous snapshot are sent to an S3 Bucket for later retrieval; the unchanged blocks are a cascade reference from the previous snapshots.

Although EBS Snapshots are incremental backups, deleting any one of the snapshots does not impact the integrity of other snapshots. Later these snapshots can be easily used to create a new EBS volume of the same or even different size than the original EBS volume from where the snapshot was taken.

More details on EBS Snapshots can be found in the Amazon User Guide for Linux Instances.

Teradata Aster Analytics on AWS uses the EBS Snapshot mechanism to provide a simple yet powerful, scalable, and highly available backup solution.
