Each level within a dimension typically represents a group of data sharing a logical attribute within a dimension. For example, cities within a geography dimension or quarters within a time dimension are considered levels. A level must belong to a hierarchy. Member properties are extra attributes (columns) associated with each member of a level.

All dimension members must be members of a level within a hierarchy.
