Regions typically represent the physical locations where the Unity servers are installed, but are not restricted to representing physical locations. All Unity processes and managed Teradata Database systems must be assigned to a Region. If only a single Unity server is deployed, then only a single Region must be defined. Otherwise, two Regions must defined.

A Unity Region specifies proximity of managed Teradata Database systems to the Unity servers to reduce the amount of network traffic. It also groups Unity processes for availability.

For example, in a single Unity server deployment defining a single Region (RB), all Unity processes and managed Teradata Database systems are assigned to one Region.

In another example, two Regions (RB1 and RB2) are defined for two Unity servers deployed in the same data center. If there are only two managed Teradata Database systems, the Unity servers can be deployed in each Teradata cabinet. Each Unity server and managed Teradata Database system would be in its own Region.

Additional managed Teradata Database systems can be assigned either Region.

If the Unity servers are split across the two data centers, each Region contains a single Unity server and corresponding managed Teradata Database systems. Each managed Teradata Database system and Unity server is placed in a separate Region. In the figure below, RB and TOR Regions represent data centers and contain Unity server and managed Teradata Database systems in that data center.

If the environment has managed Teradata Database systems in more than two data center locations, Regions correspond to where the Unity servers are installed. For managed Teradata Database systems in data centers without Unity servers, assign those managed Teradata Database systems to the Region to which it is closest.
