When you initially provision an environment, you specify the instance size of the primary cluster.

After provisioning your environment, you can scale the original instance size up or down by up to two instance sizes. This operation requires restarting the primary cluster. To minimize the impact of the restart, the Session Manager holds active sessions and queries. When the operation completes, you are charged for the new instance size.

Scaling Up

Scaling up improves performance but increases cost.

Use cases for scaling up include the following:
  • Short-term increases in workload

For example, during a promotional event, when you need additional resources to maintain optimal performance.

  • Data-intensive tasks

For example, big data analysis or complex simulations, when you need additional resources to speed up processing.

Scaling Down

Scaling down decreases cost but reduces memory and compute resources.

During periods of reduced demand, such as nonpeak hours or slower business seasons, you can avoid paying for unused resources.

How to Scale Primary Cluster Up or Down

To change the instance size of your primary cluster, do the following:
  1. At https://support.teradata.com, log in and select Request a Change.
  2. Complete the form and ask to change the instance size of your primary cluster.

You can add or subtract up to two instance sizes per request.
