Universal builds for IntelliFlex Release 2.1 consist of hybrid SSD configurations with equal numbers of read-intensive (RI) and write-intensive (WI) SSD arrays, or RI-only configurations using only read-intensive arrays. IntelliFlex 2.1 cabinets can be configured only as half or full cabinets. Systems can contain single or multiple cliques.

Half-cabinet configurations consist of six Advanced SQL Engine nodes and one HSN with up to four SSD arrays.

Full-cabinet configurations consist of either 12 Advanced SQL Engine nodes and one or two HSN, or a pair of six Advanced SQL Engine nodes and one HSN, both with up to eight SSD arrays.

Each cabinet may include any of the following, depending on the customer's system configuration and cabinet power type:
  • Up to seven Advanced SQL Engine nodes for Power A; up to 14 Advanced SQL Engine nodes for Power BCD
  • Up to two WI SSD arrays using a 5350 drive enclosure for Power A; up to four WI SSD arrays for Power BCD
  • Up to two RI SSD arrays using a DE224C drive enclosure for Power A; up to four RI SSD arrays for Power BCD
  • Up to two pairs RBOD/EBOD (IOM) arrays using DE224C drive enclosure for Power A; up to four pairs RBOD/EBOD (IOM) arrays using DE224C drive enclosure for Power BCD
  • Up to 10 PE/Analytics nodes for Power A; up to 19 PE/Analytics nodes for Power BCD
  • VMSs
    • VMS 3.x (R1208WF): Both of type VMS (no specific designation). Two are required.
    • VMS 2.x (R1208WT): System VMS and Cabinet VMS. A System VMS is required. A Cabinet VMS is added for redundancy.
  • One rackmount KMM
  • Two 36-port EDR first-tier InfiniBand switches (optional in expansion cabinets)
  • Two 36-port EDR second-tier InfiniBand switches (optional in expansion cabinets)
  • Two 1 GB Ethernet switches
  • Two 10 GB CLAN switches (optional)
  • For 2U Servers Only: There are up to seven servers combined with TMS, channel server, SWS, or SAS worker nodes for Power A; there are up to 13 servers combined with TMS, channel server, SWS, or SAS worker nodes for Power BCD

Build Rules

Components must be installed in a certain order, with maximum numbers of each limited by the power type used in the system.

  1. Install WI SSD arrays (using 5350 drive enclosures) from the bottom of the cabinet up, in the following order:
Chassis in U spaces 2-3 All Power Types
Chassis in U spaces 6-7 Power Types BCD
Chassis in U spaces 33-34 All Power Types
Chassis in U spaces 37-38 Power Types BCD

If you are updating an existing system, you may need to move a node or TMS to place the new storage array in the correct position.

  2. Install RI SSD arrays (using DE224C drive enclosures) from the bottom of the cabinet up, in the following order:
Chassis in U spaces 4-5 All Power Types
Chassis in U spaces 8-9 Power Types BCD
Chassis in U spaces 35-36 All Power Types
Chassis in U spaces 39-40 Power Types BCD

If you are updating an existing system, you may need to move a node or TMS to place the new storage array in the correct position.

  3. Install RBOD/EBOD (IOM) SSD arrays (using DE224C drive enclosure) from the bottom of the cabinet up, in the following order:
RBOD in U spaces 2-3 All Power Types
EBOD (IOM) in U spaces 4-5 All Power Types
RBOD in U spaces 6-7 Power Types BCD
EBOD (IOM) in U spaces 8-9 Power Types BCD
RBOD in U spaces 33-34 All Power Types
EBOD (IOM) in U spaces 35-36 All Power Types
RBOD in U spaces 37-38 Power Types BCD
EBOD (IOM) in U spaces 39-40 Power Types BCD
  4. Install Advanced SQL Engine nodes from the bottom of the cabinet up, after installing the storage arrays. If you have a mix of Dell R630 and Intel R1208WF nodes, place the Dell nodes first, in the following order:
Chassis in U space 2 Power Types BCD
Chassis in U space 6 Power Types BCD
Chassis in U space 8 Power Types BCD
Chassis in U space 10 Power Types BCD
Chassis in U spaces 14-19 All Power Types
Chassis in U spaces 25-28 All Power Types
Chassis in U spaces 29-31 Power Types BCD
Chassis in U space 37 Power Types BCD
Chassis in U space 33 Power Types BCD

If you are updating an existing installation, you may need to move a PE node or TMS to place the new arrays in the correct position.

  5. Install PE nodes from the bottom of the cabinet up, in spaces left available after installing the storage arrays and Advanced SQL Engine nodes. Follow the order in step 4.

If you are updating an existing installation, you may need to move a TMS to place the new PE node in the correct position.

  6. Install Analytics nodes from the bottom of the cabinet up, in spaces left available after installing the storage arrays, Advanced SQL Engine nodes and PE nodes. Follow the order given in step 4.

If you are updating an existing installation, you may need to move a TMS to place the new Vantage node in the correct position.

  7. Install TMSs, SWS, SAS worker nodes, or channel servers from the bottom of the cabinet up, after installing the storage arrays and all nodes, in the following order:
    1. Consolidated TMS

Install in ascending order, by feature number

    2. Standard TMS

Install in ascending order, by feature number

    3. SWS
    4. SAS worker node
    5. Channel server
      Chassis in U spaces 14-17

The bottom of the chassis must be in the even-numbered U position

      Power Types BCD
Chassis in U spaces 18-19 All Power Types
      Chassis in U spaces 25-28

The bottom of the chassis must be in the odd-numbered U position

      All Power Types
Chassis in U spaces 29-30 Power Types BCD
Chassis in U spaces 33-34 Power Types BCD

If you are updating an existing installation, reinstall any TMSs that were removed so that all components are located in the correct positions.

  8. Install all remaining components from the bottom of the cabinet up, for all power types, in the following order:
Primary Server Management Switch, 48 Port 1 GbE U space 1, fixed
VMS 3.x (R1208WF), or VMS 2.x System or Cabinet VMS (R1208WT) U space 20 and 23, if present
KMM (optional) U space 21, if present
InfiniBand Switch, 36-port EDR, first-tier (optional in expansion cabinets) U spaces 22 and 24, if present
InfiniBand Switch, 36-port EDR, second-tier (optional in expansion cabinets) U spaces 20 and 21, if present
    10 GB Ethernet Switch (optional)

    Field Install only

    U spaces 41 and 42, if present
Secondary Server Management Switch, 48 Port 1 GbE Attic space, fixed

Example Builds: IntelliFlex 2.1

Release 2.1 build graphics show standard configuration blocks on the left side of the image. Columns on the right show allowed positions for systems using a combination of 1U nodes and 2U node/server chassis, including TMSs, channel servers, and SWS worker nodes.

Placement of chassis must follow the install build rules without exception to adhere to power constraints for the respective power types.
