As a customer, you can perform maintenance and e-fix upgrades of Vantage on VMware versions that are released and certified. See Release Notes for Teradata Vantage on VMware for the current certified releases.

Not all patches are available for Vantage on VMware.
If you have the Essential, Performance, or Optimize Success level of support or the Limited Upgrade Service and you need a major and minor upgrade, reconfiguration, or an expansion, open a change request.
Premier is the base level of support that is included with the Base, Advanced, and Enterprise license tiers. Essential, Performance, or Optimize Success levels of support are available for a fee. To add and additional level of support, contact your account team.

Before a maintenance or e-fix upgrade in a virtual environment, review the considerations and requirements in the following table.

Upgrade Consideration Requirement
Bundle Download Mechanism Obtain software upgrade bundles from the Teradata customer portal, which uses Akamai for the download process. If you are a new Akamai user, you are prompted to complete additional steps related to Akamai setup when first downloading an upgrade bundle.
Upgrade bundles may apply to maintenance and e-fix versions. For example, 16.xx.xx.
Operating System Updates Because the operating system software bundle includes both important security updates and the latest version of the utility used to upgrade Teradata components (PUT), you must download this bundle whenever upgrading other Teradata components with the exception of Server Management (CMIC), for which the required updates are included in the image itself.
Outage Preparation When upgrading the operating system and Teradata components, including Server Management (CMIC), PUT does not set a maintenance window but does automatically reboot the system. Plan accordingly.
Data Backups If performing a major or minor upgrade, use DSC to archive the existing SQL Engine. After the upgrade, use DSC to restore the archive. You do not need to archive and restore data for maintenance and e-fix upgrades.

Data backups are not otherwise required, but are recommended to protect data in the event of problems during the upgrade.

Cross-Tier Migration You cannot migrate from the Teradata Vantage on VMware Base, Advanced, or Enterprise Tiers to the Teradata Vantage on VMware Developer Tier and vice versa. They are separate products.
