The Dell PowerVault ME5 block storage array used by the Analytics Database was chosen based on its functional, performance, and availability attributes for use with the Teradata MPP architecture. The following high-level criteria were applied to the block storage solution:
  • Aligned to EDW storage model
  • Shared Storage, supporting connectivity for up to nine hosts (eight Active + one Hot Standby)
  • Fault-Tolerant through fully redundant storage subsystem components
  • Support for SCSI-3 command set, including persistent reservations
  • Sufficient READ & WRITE I/O throughput
  • Predictable I/O latency
  • Attractive cost/performance and cost/capacity economics
The Analytics Database uses the Dell PowerVault ME5 storage arrays with the following configuration:
  • Single 2U-24 PowerVault ME5024 storage enclosure per Array, each with the following:
    • Dual or redundant RAID controllers
    • Dual or redundant power supplies and fans
    • Within the ME5024: Twenty-two 3.84TB 3-DWPD or Twenty-two 7.68TB 1-DWPD SSDs (20 SSDs for RAID-1, plus 2 Hot Spare)
    • Four (of eight) 25GbE iSCSI ports connected to two 25GbE redundant fabrics
    • Two 1GbE management ports connected to both of the TOR management switches

  • Exactly (20) 3.84TB or 7.68TB SSDs per array to be used for database storage.
  • Exactly (2) Dynamic / Hot Spare SSD per array
  • Pool and Volume provisioning constructed in SSD drive pairs, from left to right, as outlined in the following image:

  • Controller ownership of pools is defined as follows:

  • Each volume constructed within each pool is configured as follows:
    • *size:
      3836 GB (if using 3.8TB 3-DWPD SSDs)
      7675 GB (if using 7.7TB 1-DWPD SSDs)

    • *write policy: write-through*
    • cache optimization: standard-atomic-write
    • read ahead: adaptive
    • tier-affinity: no-affinity

  • A single host group that includes the iSCSI initiator (iqn) for all Analytics Database VMs in the clique, with a Linux operating system.
  • Each volume mapped to all hosts in the clique are as follows:
    • The LUNs mapped to two ports on each controller (a0,a2,b0,b2)
    • The LUNs associated with the previously created host group, which has all the initiators of all VMs included.
