The Teradata Viewpoint Administrator must assign the Manage Lab Groups permission using Roles Manager for your Viewpoint role.
The Teradata Database user ID you use when you log on to the portlet must have the DROP USER Teradata Database privilege to update or delete a lab group and the following privileges to create a lab group:
  • CREATE USER
  • CREATE ROLE WITH GRANT OPTION
  • GRANT EXECUTE ON DBC.LogonRule
A wizard at the top of the screen guides you through the steps to create a new lab group. You can return to completed steps by clicking the numbered step.

After a lab group is created, most settings can be changed at a later time by the Viewpoint role with Manage Lab Groups permission.

  1. From the Monitoring tab, click next to LAB GROUPS.
  2. In Lab Group (step 1), do the following to specify lab group details and the lab group owner email notification:
    1. Type a lab group name, up to 18 characters.
    2. [Optional] Type a lab group description up to 500 characters.
    3. Type or select a parent database from the list. If the parent database is in a Unity managed system, Available space displays the minimum amount of space available across all of the Unity managed systems.
    4. Type the amount of space to allocate to the lab group. If the space is too low, lab users will be unable to request to add more labs in the lab group.
    5. [Optional] Select the Enable display of users and roles for the lab group and labs check box to enable lab users to see the Users tab when viewing lab group details and lab details.
    6. Type a percentage from 1% to 100%. When the allocated space is within the specified percentage of the lab group size, the lab group owner receives an email notification, depending on the email notification settings.
    7. Click Next.
  3. In Labs (step 2), specify the default lab settings, request limits, and lab owner email notifications, and click Next. The default lab settings appear when labs are created, but users can submit a request to overwrite the settings for their specific labs. Default lab settings can be changed by the Viewpoint role with Manage Lab Groups permission after the lab group is created except where noted.
    1. Type a size for the default lab. If the size is too low, users will be unable to load more data into the lab, requiring the lab user to send frequent requests to increase the lab size.
    2. [Optional] Select the Expire lab after check box and either select the number of days from the list or type a number from 1 to 9999 and press Enter. If the check box is not selected, no lab expiration is set.
    3. [Optional] Select the Limit lab expiration requests check box and enter the number of days to enable users to request lab expirations up to that number of days. This option is only available if you selected and set the Expire lab after option.
If you select the Limit lab expiration requests check box, the No expiration option is not available to request submitters for labs within this lab group.
    4. [Optional] Select the Delete expired after check box and either select the number of days from the list or type the number of days from 1 to 9999 and press Enter if you want an expired lab to delete automatically when the set value is reached.
    5. [Optional] Select the Grant lab users CREATE OBJECT privilege check box to allow lab users to create Teradata Database objects in the underlying Lab database using the CREATE OBJECT statement. This setting cannot be changed after the lab group is created.
    6. [Optional] Type a lab prefix. The lab prefix precedes all lab names in the lab group to help manage workloads. It may be up to 6 characters, or up to twelve characters if the Extended Object Names feature has been enabled on the selected Teradata system. The lab prefix cannot be changed after the lab group is created.
    7. [Optional] Type lab instructions, up to 500 characters. Lab instructions provide guidance and best practices to help lab users.
    8. [Optional] Under Request Limits, select the Limit the maximum lab size and specify a maximum size in MB, GB, or TB from 1 to 9999 for all labs in a lab group. Requests to increase a lab size that exceed the specified maximum lab size will be sent to the lab group owner for approval. For more information, see Request Limits.
    9. [Optional] Select the Automatically reject requests exceeding the limit check box to automatically reject requests from lab owners and users for sizes over that specified in the Limit the maximum lab size option.
    10. [Optional] Under Request Limits, select the check box, and then select the number of days from the list or type the number of days from 1 to 9999 and press Enter to limit the maximum cumulative life for all labs in the lab group. Requests to extend a lab that exceed the specified number of days will be sent to the lab group owner for approval. For more information, see Request Limits.
    11. [Optional] Select the Automatically reject requests exceeding the limit check box to automatically reject requests from lab owners and users for time periods over that specified in the Limit the maximum cumulative life option.
    12. Under Lab Owner Email Notifications, select the number of days before a lab expires in which to trigger an email notification. An email notification is sent to the lab owner when the number of days is reached, depending on the email notification settings.
    13. Under Lab Owner Email Notifications, type a percentage from 1% to 99%. An email notification is sent to the lab owner when the available space for the lab falls below the percentage you set, depending on the email notification settings.
  4. In Permissions (step 3), select the appropriate check boxes to grant additional full access lab permissions. These are Teradata Database privileges granted to full access default users and lab users for labs that are added within this lab group.
  5. In Owners (step 4), select which Viewpoint users and roles own the lab group (approve lab requests):
    1. Select a user from the Available users box and click to move that user (owner) to the Selected users box.

If there are more than 500 users, use the User list filter.

    2. Select a role from the Available roles box and click to move that role to the Selected roles box.
    3. [Optional] In the User list filter box, type to filter the list of available users.
    4. Click Next.
  6. In Access Limits (step 5), select which Teradata Database users and roles can be added to labs in this lab group. If the system is part of a Unity Environment, the available users and roles are only those that exist in all of the Unity managed systems.
    Option Description
Public lab group, Anyone can be added to a lab Allow any Teradata Database user or role to have default access or be added via a request.
Once you save a group without any restrictions (public), you cannot make it private. You can switch among public group options at any time.
Public lab group, Only selected users can be added to a lab Restrict which Teradata Database users and roles can be added to labs in this group.
Public lab group, Selected users cannot be added to a lab Specify which Teradata Database users and roles cannot be added to labs in this group, and optionally disable configuration of user access using roles.
Private lab group Restrict which Teradata Database users and roles can be added to labs in this group. Labs in a private group are visible to selected users and roles.
Once you save a group as private, you can change the lab group to public.
    1. For options that require user and role selection, select from the Available users box, and click to move that user to the Selected users box.

If there are more than 500 users, use the User list filter.

    2. Select a role from the Available roles box, and click to move that role to the Selected roles box.
    3. Click Next.
  7. In Default Access (step 6), do one of the following to provide access to all labs in this lab group. If the system is part of a Unity Environment, the available users and roles are only those that exist in all of the Unity managed systems.

If a selected user or role is read-only at the lab group level, the read-only option for that user or role is hidden for associated labs. You can upgrade a read-only user or role to full permission by selecting them in the individual labs.

If a selected user or role has full permission at the lab group level, they will not appear in the list of available users for associated labs because they already have full access in associated labs.

    Option Description
Do not give access Click Next if you do not want to create any default users. A default user is a Teradata Database user or role that has either full control or is read-only for all labs in a lab group.
    Give access
    1. Select the Give access to selected users and roles check box to give lab access to selected Teradata Database users and roles in the lab group.
When you give access to default users and roles, it is either full control or read-only for all labs in the lab group.
    2. Select a user from the Available users box, and click to move that user to the Selected users box.

If there are more than 500 users, use the User list filter.

    3. Select a role from the Available roles box, and click to move that role to the Selected roles box.
    4. [Optional] Select the Read-only check box if you do not want the user or role to create, modify, or drop Teradata Database objects in the labs in the lab group.
    5. Click Next.
  8. In Approvers (step 7), do one of the following to set approvers for each request type: For more information, see approval controls.

Thresholds can be set and approvers selected for each request type. By default, all requests are sent to the lab group owner for approval. Approvals can be delegated to lab owners or set to automatically approve.
