MDS Is Enabled

Controls whether the rsgmain program is started in the RSG vproc when Teradata Database starts.

Teradata Meta Data Services (MDS) tracks changes to the Teradata Data Dictionary, and can be used to store business metadata. Automatic Database Information Metamodel (DIM) Update is an optional feature that tracks Data Dictionary changes for multiple Teradata systems, and automatically updates the MDS repository database. The MDS MetaManager utility can be used to enable DIM Update for a Teradata system.

For DIM Update to work, the MDS DDL Gateway and Action Processor services must be automatically started at system boot time, or manually started later, and the rsgmain program must be started in the Relay Services Gateway (RSG) vproc. The MDS Is Enabled field controls whether the rsgmain program is started automatically in the RSG vproc when Teradata starts.

When the MDS Automatic DIM Update feature is enabled, Data Definition Language statements and other transactional messages are sent to the RSG vproc, which relays them to MDS. If the MDS services are stopped, or if the MetaManager utility is used to disable DIM Update, Teradata Database logs the names of databases affected by these transactions to the MDS recovery table until the MDS services are started, or until the MetaManager utility is used to enable DIM Update. The recovery table tells MDS what databases were affected while MDS was down.

Field Group

Valid Settings

Use the MDS Automatic DIM Update feature after MDS has been installed. The rsgmain program will be started in the RSG vproc the next time Teradata Database is restarted.

Use this setting if MDS is not being used, or will not be used for an extended period of time, to prevent the MDS recovery table from growing very large.

Changes Take Effect

After the next Teradata Database restart.
