The following table lists the software and hardware required before you install MDS.

Prerequisite Description
Teradata Database System and User Account The MDS repository is stored in a Teradata Database system, 13.00 or later.

The minimum size of the Teradata Database for a production MDS repository is 50 MB. A versioned repository requires more space than a non-versioned repository.

A Teradata user account is required for each Teradata Database system to be loaded into the MDS repository. Unless the metaviews utility is used, these users must be granted SELECT privileges to the DBC tables.

If you are installing MDS on the workstation of the Teradata MDS administrator, grant the user all privileges to the Teradata Database system.

ODBC Driver for Teradata (ODBC) and Data Source Name (DSN) For each system that is running MDS software, you must install and configure the appropriate Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) Driver for Teradata 13.00.00 or later. For best results use the Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) Driver for Teradata for the Teradata version that matches the version of MDS you are installing. You must also install compatible versions of Shared ICU Libraries for Teradata and Teradata GSS Client.

The MDS 15.00 Suite Install for Windows automatically installs the matching version of the ODBC Driver for Teradata, Shared ICU libraries for Teradata, and Teradata GSS client.

Create a System DSN for each of the Teradata Database systems that will contain the MDS repository.

On Linux systems, the odbc.ini file specifies the DSN information. The name and location of the odbc.ini file can be specified with the ODBCINI environment variable.

On Windows systems, when you configure the ODBC DSN:
  • Make sure the Do not resolve alias name to IP address checkbox is cleared.
  • Select the Run in Quiet Mode checkbox.
  • Increase the Maximum Response Buffer Size to 65,477.

On Linux Kanji systems, include the character set and code page information in the DSN information. For example:

  • CharacterSet=KanjiEUC_0U
  • IANAAppCodePage=18
Windows or Linux Workstation
Hardware requirements are:
Processor Pentium PC or greater
RAM 1 GB
Free disk space 60 MB

  • Windows: Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8
This can be an application node on the Teradata Database system or a separate host with a network connection to the Teradata Database system.
Repository Explorer Web Application Server
If you are installing the Repository Explorer web application, the hardware requirements are:
Processor 2 CPU (Dual Core)
RAM 12.0 GB
Free disk space 200 MB
Operating system Microsoft Windows Server 2003 SP2+, 2008 R2, or SUSE Linux 10/11 or Red Hat Linux 6
