You can select components in the Tree View and use the Connect command to connect to the components. You can connect to a variety of components, such as CMICs, nodes, VMSs, and switches.
  1. From the Tree View, select the component to which you want to connect.
  2. Do one of the following:
    • Select Functions > Connect.
    • From the toolbar, click Connect.
For components with more than one way to connect, the Connect dialog box appears.
  3. Select the connection type that you want to use as noted in the following table. Connection types vary, depending on the component selected. For example, components without web interfaces do not support the Http or Https connection types. The options offered are based on what the chassis supports.
    Option Description
Console Allows you to make a console connection to the component using the New Connection dialog box. This option is used to display the component messages during the BIOS booting process or to access the BIOS setup.
Secure Shell (SSH) Allows you to make an SSH connection using the New Connection dialog box. Port 22 is always used for SSH connections.
Telnet Allows you to make a Telnet connection using the New Connection dialog box. This option is only available if the Telnet server of the component is enabled. Port 23 is always used for Telnet connections.
Http / Https Displays the web page (http) or secure web page (https) for devices that offer a web interface. Also displays the application name, if provided. The application can specify the port to use, but the default ports are:
    • http: 80
    • https: 443

If SMClient is connected through the private network, the default browser of the user opens to the private address of the chassis. If SMClient is connected through the customer network, a web proxy provides access to the web interface through port 7755. Only one web proxy can be enabled at a time for each customer IP.

  4. Click Ok. If the Prompt for connection settings check box is selected on the Options dialog box, which is available from Tools > Options on the SMClient Main window, the New Connection dialog box appears; otherwise, the Client Connections Window appears.
