Online help includes the following information describing how BTEQ differentiates BTEQ commands from SQL requests:

BTEQ commands must be preceded by a dot (.) character.

BTEQ commands can end with a semicolon (;).

Commands that do not start with a dot are processed as Teradata SQL queries, and are submitted to the Teradata Database.
