The optional bring your own license (BYOL) purchase method allows you to use a license purchased directly from Teradata for the following products:
  • Teradata Database (Base, Advanced, and Enterprise tiers only)
  • Teradata IntelliSphere

The quantity of Teradata Database licenses is expressed in TCores. TCore values are based on the vCPU count and throughput of each supported instance type. Adding nodes increases the required TCores. The quantity of TCores affects the performance capabilities of the system. Less TCores means fewer virtual CPUs. More TCores allow you to deploy more virtual CPUs. TCores can be activated, revoked, and redeployed on public cloud platforms where Teradata Database is offered. They are portable between public cloud platforms. If you want your TCores to be portable between a public cloud platform and Teradata® IntelliCloud™ or an on-premises system, contact your Teradata Account Team.

A license entitlement provides you with the right to use a specific tier of Teradata Database software only. You cannot take an entitlement from one tier and apply it to another tier. An entitlement ID is a unique string of characters that enable you to use the licensed software. Obtain the EID from the email you received when you purchased the license.

To view and manage your Teradata license entitlements, go to https://slem.teradata.com/ecp. See the Teradata® Entitlement Management System (EMS) Customer User Guide. When deploying a Teradata software ecosystem or Teradata Database using AWS CloudFormation, each Teradata Database instance automatically requests a license activation from https://slem.teradata.com. If additional TCores are needed to properly license the software, contact your Teradata Account Team.

To use BYOL, you must first subscribe to the software on AWS, then deploy Teradata Database using the appropriate template. After deploying Teradata Database, with or without a Teradata software ecosystem, you can deploy additional Teradata software products separately. At the time of deployment, select the term of license of 1 year, 3 year, or POC which is a short-term license of 30, 60, or 90 days used for a proof-of-concept. Obtain the license term from the email you received when you purchased the license. The term is visible as a suffix to the name in the Product column after you log in to the Teradata EMS server.

BYOL requires the following:
  • Internet access while the instance is running.
  • VPC with access to the AWS endpoints.
  • Port 443 is open to https://slem.teradata.com so Teradata can verify the entitlement.
  • For inbound and outbound ports, open a protocol for All only for internal communication between the instances (not external).

To renew a license, contact your Teradata Account Team.

After a license expires, warnings are sent to the AWS CloudWatch logs (look for log group Teradata/DBS/stack-name and log stream telm_stack-name ). Warnings are followed by periodic database restarts and eventually the database is disabled.
