  1. If you do not already have JupyterLab installed on your desktop:
    1. Follow the instructions in the JupyterLab documentation to install the supported version of JupyterLab from https://jupyterlab.readthedocs.io/en/stable/getting_started/installation.html. Be sure your PATH is set correctly depending on the mechanism you choose to install JupyterLab.
    2. Install the Node.js and npm packages from https://www.npmjs.com/get-npm.
  2. If JupyterLab is already installed on your desktop:
    1. From an appropriate command window verify that you have the supported versions of the following products installed:
      Product Supported Version
      JupyterLab 0.35
      ZeroMQ Windows 4.0.2 through 4.0.4

      macOS 4.3.0 through 4.3.1

      Node v8.11.4 or later
      Npm 5.3.0 or later
    Prompt Window Command
    Command terminal on macOS

    Verify the version of JupyterLab:

    jupyter lab --version

    Verify the version of ZeroMQ:

    brew list zmq

    Verify the version of npm and node.js:

    npm --version

    node --version

    Command window on Windows

    Verify the version of JupyterLab:

    jupyter lab --version

    Verify the version of ZeroMQ from the list of installed applications in your Control Panel.

    Verify the version of npm and node.js:

    npm --version

    node --version

  3. If you do not have ZeroMQ installed or do not have the correct versions, install the ZeroMQ runtime libraries:
    1. Choose the appropriate instructions for your operating system and perform the installation:
      Operating System Instructions Location
      macOS http://zeromq.org/intro:get-the-software
      Windows http://zeromq.org/distro:microsoft-windows
    2. When the Windows installer launches, choose Minimal install, runtime only in the Select the type of install list.
    3. On Windows, make sure your PATH includes the directory where you installed the ZeroMQ libraries.
