Two different types of firmware download can be performed in the Firmware Download operation:
  • The Storage Firmware Download operation allows the downloading and updating of different types of firmware to various components of supported Teradata storage arrays in parallel.
  • The Interconnect Firmware Download operation allows the downloading and/or updating of firmware for the Interconnect switch.
  • A third option, Query Array Health, runs the Array Health Check for the selected arrays and displays the results at the end of the operation. If this option is selected, no actual firmware is downloaded.

Online Firmware Download is supported for NetApp Storage Arrays. Firmware is downloaded in groups to preserve AMP fallback. This means that storage arrays that have AMPs in the same cluster will not be downloaded to in parallel. One array must successfully complete firmware download before continuing to the subsequent array.

NetApp Arrays - All Arrays Except 280X and 5700 Controllers

PUT handles the following NetApp components:
  • Teradata Storage Array controller firmware
  • Teradata Storage Array NVSRAM
  • ESM NVSRAM
  • ESM Firmware
  • Drive Firmware

For Drive Firmware, PUT allows one failure per drive group and does not terminate all downloads when a failure is encountered.

PUT downloads firmware to one component (controller, ESM card, or drive) per array at a time. For drive downloads, PUT downloads firmware to one drive from each drive group simultaneously, which increases parallelism to more than one drive per array. Once a download failure is encountered on an array, no other downloads are attempted on that array.

The following types of downloads are also supported online:
  • Controller firmware (online and staged)
  • ESM NVSRAM (online and staged)
  • ESM

NetApp Arrays - 280X and 5700 Controllers

PUT handles the following NetApp components for arrays with 280X and 5700 controllers:
  • Teradata Firmware Bundle: Downloads are supported online
  • Teradata Storage Array NVSRAM: Downloads are supported online
  • Drive Firmware: Downloaded to one drive at a time in the diskpool

For Drive Firmware, PUT allows one failure per drive group and does not terminate all downloads when a failure is encountered.

DotHill Arrays

PUT also downloads firmware to DotHill storage arrays. The following components can be downloaded:
  • RAID Storage Firmware
  • Drive Firmware

RAID Storage Firmware for DotHill arrays is delivered in a bundle and contains all components to be downloaded. It takes about 30 minutes per array for the RAID Storage System Firmware to download.

Drive firmware is updated in parallel across vdisks, one drive at a time, per vdisk. One exception: Arrays with controller firmware version CF101XXXX download sequentially, to one drive at a time.

Interconnect Switch

BYNET is not available for subnet selection. The Server Management network must by selected for this operation. PUT performs the following tasks in parallel for one fabric at a time.
  • Delete unused firmware image on a switch
  • Reboot switch (only on 5030 switch)
  • Copy and flash new firmware image to a switch
  • Reboot switch
PUT has options to download to only one Fabric or both Fabrics in a single run of PUT. If the download to the first Fabric fails, PUT does not continue downloading to the next Fabric.
