Teradata Tools and Utilities

Teradata storage must always be balanced across all AMPs in a clique. “Balanced” means all AMPs have exactly the same amount of storage assigned. System/AMP Configuration within the Configure Teradata Vantage operation performs and validates balancing.

The System/AMP Configuration step looks at all available storage in cliques and categories as explained in the following table.
Clique/Category Description
ALL_ONE_SIZE This is normally how systems are staged based on the following information:
  • Calculate max AMPs allowed for number of nodes and real memory available on each node (EX: 2-node clique w/4 GB RAM=32 AMPs max).
  • Count down from maximum AMPs until we find a number that evenly divides into disk total.
  • If clique contains all Teradata arrays, number of AMPs is reset to equal the number of drive groups present on the arrays. Each AMP is then assigned all the pdisks from one drive group.
  • Otherwise, pdisks are spread evenly across all AMPs.
MULTIPLE_BALANCED_SIZES This balance option uses different disk sizes in a clique, the same number of each size. The disks are created as follows:
  • Calculate as before except only count the number of one size - not the total.
  • Once new AMPs are created, the same number of each size is assigned to each new amp. For example, four disks of 4 GB and four disks of 9 GB will give four AMPs, each with one 4 GB disk and one 9 GB disk.
MULTIPLE_UNBALANCED_SIZES If the clique is unbalanced, PUT performs the following actions depending on the configuration state:
  • Typical Configuration (new or reconfiguration). An error message displays unbalanced condition and aborts. You must re-run Configure Teradata Vantage operation in Custom Configuration mode.
  • Custom Configuration (new). An unbalanced warning message appears. There is no default AMP option, but you can specify the number of new AMPs. Pdisks are assigned using the most common disk size; all other disks are left unassigned.
  • Custom Configuration (reconfiguration). No new AMPs are created. No new storage is assigned as pdisks and the existing configuration is unchanged.
