To move data from one tape to another, use the TSM MOVE DATA command.

  • Identify all the tapes that need to be cleaned and moved to scratch.
  • Run the MOVE DATA command on each tape, setting the RECONStruct parameter to 'Yes'.

Reconstruction removes empty space that accumulated during deletion of logical files from the tape.

  • After you have successfully moved data from a primary tape to a new tape, mark the new tape as unavailable until you have completed the entire process of moving all data on all tapes.

This makes sure that TSM does not move data or images from the new tapes to a single tape.

  • After moving all data from primary tapes, clean the primary tapes and move to scratch.

For future backup jobs, ensure that the management class for TARA backup jobs uses the correct set of tapes in the storage pool. Modify the TSM management class used for TARA to point to the new storage pool or repeat the process of using the MOVE DATA command to move images from the new storage pool tapes back to the original storage pool configured for the management class.
