The Teradata Appliance for SAS High-Performance Analytics is made up of a combination of cabinet types, depending on the system configuration. The number of cabinets used depends on the size of the SAS system, as well as the network fabric.

  • The SAS 750 Appliance supports Teradata Database systems, Aster systems, and Hadoop systems as data sources inter-connected via the UDA (Unified Data Architecture).
  • The SAS 750 Appliance supports legacy Teradata Database systems as data sources with BYNET-over-Ethernet and BYNET V4 networks. The SAS 750 Appliance interconnects to these systems using Teradata Connect nodes as the gateway.

SAS HPA Appliance Cabinets for UDA Configurations

SAS HPA Appliance cabinets configured for UDA connect to a BYNET V5 or InfiniBand fabric. SAS HPA Appliances that connect to a UDA fabric include base and expansion appliance cabinets. For large systems, additional InfiniBand cabinets may be needed for additional large switches.

An Appliance Base cabinet contains the following components:

  • Three to 18 SAS HPA worker nodes, Mid-tier nodes, and SAS App Servers
  • Power hardware
  • One virtualized management server (System VMS)
  • One KVM console chassis
  • Two InfiniBand switches for node-to-switch connections

An Appliance Expansion cabinet contains the following components:

  • One to 18 SAS HPA worker nodes, Mid-tier nodes, and SAS App Servers (limited to 15 nodes in a two-cabinet system)
  • Power hardware
  • One virtualized management server (Cabinet VMS)
  • Two InfiniBand switches for either node-to-switch or switch-to-switch connections (except in two-cabinet systems)

An InfiniBand cabinet (if needed) contains:

  • One or more InfiniBand switches for connection to the Teradata or UDA fabric
  • Power hardware
  • Additional nodes
Systems with Type A power have fewer than the maximum allowable number of nodes.

SAS HPA Appliance Cabinets for Teradata Connect Configurations

SAS HPA Appliance cabinets that use Teradata Connect nodes connect to a BYNET V4 and BYNET-over-Ethernet fabric. SAS HPA Appliances that use Teradata Connect nodes include base and expansion appliance cabinets.

An Appliance Base cabinet contains the following components:

  • Up to 20 nodes:
    • One to four Teradata Connect nodes
    • Three to 17 SAS HPA worker nodes, Mid-tier nodes, and SAS App Servers when Teradata Connect nodes are present
  • Power hardware
  • One virtualized management server (System VMS)
  • One KVM console chassis
  • Two InfiniBand switches for node-to-switch connections

An Appliance Expansion cabinet contains the following components:

  • Up to 20 nodes:
    • Up to four Teradata Connect nodes (not required for some configurations)
    • One to 17 SAS HPA worker nodes, Mid-tier nodes, and SAS App Servers when Teradata Connect nodes are present
    • One to 18 SAS worker nodes if no Teradata Connect nodes are present
  • Power hardware
  • One virtualized management server (Cabinet VMS)
  • Two InfiniBand switches for either node-to-switch or switch-to-switch connections (except in two-cabinet systems)
Systems with Type A power have fewer than the maximum allowable number of nodes.
