Feature Feature Description
Processing Node

Each system base cabinet or Platform Framework Cabinet can contain one or two 680 systems. Each system has one Intel R1208WT processing node with:
  • Two 2.6 GHz fourteen-core Intel Xeon E5-2697 v3 processors
  • One of 3 DIMM configurations:
    • 128 GB of memory using eight 16 GB DIMMs
    • 256 GB of memory using eight 32 GB DIMMs
    • 512 GB of memory using sixteen 32 GB DIMMs
  • Disk drives:
    • Two 900 GB SAS (serial-attached SCSI) SED drives for OS
    • One 600 GB SAS SED drive for dump processing to improve restart performance
    • Five additional drive bays available for customer use; 900 GB SED drives supported
  • DVD drive
  • Onboard connectivity to the server management network
  • Adapter connectivity to the BYNET InfiniBand network when the 680 system is part of a UDA environment or connected to a Channel server
  • Disk storage adapter
  • Optional network communication I/O module
  • Optional network connection I/O module to managed BAR servers
Disk Storage A 680 system in a Teradata system base cabinet or Platform Framework Cabinet contains one disk array. The drive enclosure consists of:
  • Dual controller modules
  • Two power supply/cooling modules
  • RAID 1: SAS 2.5" 10K rpm drives, available in 300 GB, 600 GB, and 900 GB capacities
A system base cabinet or Platform Framework Cabinet can contain one or two 680 systems:
  • One database node connects to one disk array
  • The array has one enclosure with two global hot spare drives
  • RAID 1: 44 drives are used in the enclosure for 44 total drives
For more information about the Teradata platforms that can contain a 680 system, see the appropriate Product and Site Preparation Guide.
For more information about the Platform Framework Cabinet, see the Teradata Platform Framework Cabinet Model 12 Product and Site Preparation Guide, B035-5388.
Full Disk Encryption (FDE) The 680 platform supports full disk encryption for all database node disks and storage disks.
Operating System SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 (SLES 11) SP1
Teradata Database
Contact Teradata Customer Support to confirm the exact version of the Teradata Database and PDE packages required for this platform.
The Teradata Database can be either of the following:
  • Teradata Database Release 14.10.03.xx or later
  • Teradata Database Release 15.00.01.xx or later
Software Compression

The 680 platform uses the Teradata Database block-level software compression feature. Default block-level software compression settings are pre-configured and optimized for 680 system-level performance.

Adapters SAS disk storage adapter:
  • LSI 9206-16E quad 6 Gb SAS PCIe3 adapter in processing nodes
BYNET InfiniBand adapter when connected to a UDA environment or a Channel server:
  • MCB194A-FCAT (Connect-IB) InfiniBand PCIe3 adapter in processing node
Cable Modes Teradata systems are shipped with multi-mode fiber (MMF) connections for the 10Gb Ethernet optical interface into all servers. Single-mode fiber (SMF) connections are not supported.
Virtualized Management Server (VMS) A virtualized management server (VMS) is an Intel R1208 or Intel R1208WT chassis in a Teradata system base cabinet or Platform Framework Cabinet. Each 680 is connected to a system VMS. A VMS can host the following virtual machines (VMs):
  • CMIC -- The CMIC provides server management services for the system cabinets.
  • SWS -- The SWS is the service entry for the system.
  • Viewpoint -- The Viewpoint VM manages only a single Teradata system
Each system VMS consists of:
  • CMIC, SWS, and Viewpoint VMs. A Viewpoint VM supports up to a maximum of 128 nodes and servers in a single system.
  • Intel R1208: Two 2.0 GHz six-core 15 MB L3 cache E5-2620 processors, dual socket
  • Intel R1208WT: Two 2.4 GHz six-core 15 MB L3 cache E5-2620 v3 processors, dual socket
  • 128 GB memory using 16 GB DIMMs
  • Two 1.2 TB RAID 1 drives for boot/system operations
  • Two 1.2 TB RAID 1 drives for Viewpoint data storage
  • Two 1.2 TB RAID 1 drives for Provisioning Server Instances
  • Onboard connectivity to server management network
  • Onboard or adapter connectivity to customer network
  • OS:
    • Linux SLES 11 SP1 OS on VMS, CMIC, and SWS VMs
    • Linux SLES 10 SP3 OS on Viewpoint VM
Server Management Web (SMWeb) Services Server management functions run on the CMIC VM (on a VMS). The CMIC hosts the SMWeb Services Home page and provides applications and services for server management on an MPP system:
  • Server Management Client: Monitor status, display events, and perform commands from a single operational view of the system.
  • Command Line Interface: Download remote command line interface utilities
  • Save and Restore: Download, upload, and view configuration files
  • Users and Groups: Manage user and group security levels
  • Network, Devices, and CMICs: Configure the server management network and device management
  • TVI Connection: Configure settings for TVI data communications
The TVI connection allows Teradata personnel to establish a remote connection to the customer system and allows communication from the customer system to Teradata.
For use by customer on-site staff members and Teradata Customer Support.
SMWeb 11.04 or later and Teradata ServiceConnect are required for 680 systems.

For information about using SMWeb Services, see the Teradata Server Management Web Services User Guide, B035-5350, or the online help on the SMWeb Services home page.

Multi-System Support A server management network (domain) can support multiple systems:
  • For each full production 1700, 1800, 2700, 2750, 6700, 6750, or 6800 system, multi-system support enables the inclusion of one 680 system in the base or expansion cabinet, depending on the system configuration.
  • For each full production 2800 system, multi-system support enables the inclusion of a second 2800 system or two 680 systems in the 2800 base cabinet.
  • For each full production 2850 system, multi-system support enables the inclusion of a second 2850 system or two 680 systems in the 2850 base cabinet.
  • For each full production Appliance for Hadoop 3 or 4 system, multi-system support enables the inclusion of one 680 system in the base or expansion cabinet, depending on the system configuration.
  • For each full production Aster Appliance 3H or 4 system, multi-system support enables the inclusion of one 680 system in the base or expansion cabinet, depending on the system configuration.
  • In a Platform Framework Cabinet, multi-system support enables the inclusion of a second 680 system in the cabinet.

Contact Teradata for more information about multi-system configurations.

Keyboard, Video, Mouse (KVM) Console The KVM resides in the Teradata system base processing/storage cabinet or the Platform Framework cabinet and has VGA and USB connections to the VMS.
