The SQLSTATE variable is an ANSI standard, 5 character string value logically divided into a 2 character class and a 3 character subclass.
SQLSTATE is defined as a character variable:
char SQLSTATE[6];
Note that SQLSTATE is defined as having six characters. The last character of the variable holds the null character '\0' for C string termination.
A SQLSTATE and a SQLCODE variable can be defined for the same compilation unit. Both contain valid result codes.
For details on the ANSI SQLSTATE variable, see SQL Stored Procedures and Embedded SQL (B035‑1148).
