An import file is an input file that contains data records to be transferred along with associated SQL requests that contain a USING modifier. That clause maps out how each record is to be interpreted for expansion of the statements to be processed by SQL Engine.

The following table explain how to specify an import file:

System Type Import File
Mainframe-attached Use a z/OS DD statement to define an import file, then execute a BTEQ IMPORT command to open the file before entering an SQL request.
Workstation-attached Import files do not have to be defined, but the IMPORT command must be used to open an import file before submitting an SQL request.
