The Platform Framework Cabinet can include any combination of the following chassis:
  • Nodes
  • Servers
  • Switches
  • Teradata Managed Servers (TMS)
  • Teradata Multipurpose Servers (TMS)
  • Teradata Managed Storage Servers (TMSS)
  • Teradata Multipurpose Storage Servers (TMSS)
  • BAR storage configurations

The placement of the hardware components in a cabinet follows these general cabinet build conventions:

  • All chassis except the top Ethernet switches are loaded from the front of the cabinet, and accessible from both front and rear of the cabinet. The top Ethernet switches are loaded and accessible only from the rear of the cabinet.
  • Each chassis type (servers, switches, and so on), has a range of standard positions in the cabinet. Chassis are numbered from the bottom up.
  • Chassis can be managed, monitored, or unmanaged.
    • Managed chassis are connected to the primary server management network by an Ethernet port on the chassis. Chassis with a second Ethernet port are connected to the secondary server management network. Managed chassis are actively monitored by server management and allow service personnel to manage various chassis functions through SMWeb Services.
    • Monitored chassis are connected to server management through a customer network and are subject to customer network configuration and availability. Monitored chassis are actively monitored by server management but service personnel cannot manage chassis functions through SMWeb Services.
    • Unmanaged chassis are not connected to the primary or secondary server management networks. The chassis are not monitored by server management and service personnel cannot manage chassis functions through SMWeb Services.
  • Chassis that are managed or monitored over the server management network have assigned chassis ID numbers. The chassis ID number identifies the chassis by position/type in the server management interface.
  • Unmanaged chassis can be numbered by position for cabling purposes only. If numbered, the numbers do not appear in the server management interface as identification of the chassis.
  • All chassis except the top Ethernet switches are loaded from the front of the cabinet, and accessible from both front and rear of the cabinet. The top Ethernet switches are loaded and accessible only from the rear of the cabinet.
The general build sequence is as follows:
  1. If a KVM is included, install it in U18 if available or other valid U space using the information in the following table.
    Chassis Quantity Chassis Space Allocation
    KVM (1U) 0 to 1 U18-24
  2. If a VMS is installed with a KVM, install it in U17 if available or other valid U space using the information in the following table.
    Chassis Quantity Chassis Space Allocation
    SR1625 VMS (1U, Field Install Only) 0 to 1 Install chassis from the bottom up, in U5-6, U9, U10, U13-14, U17-18, U21-22, U25-26, U29-30, U31, U32
    Intel R1208 VMS (1U) 0 to 10
    Intel R1208WT VMS (1U)
If a 1U server is installed in a 2U location (U13-14 for example), the server occupies the lower U-space and no other chassis may be installed in the empty U-space.
  3. If an encryption server reference feature (Oracle Key Manager or Quantum Scalar Key Manager) is included, install it using the information in the following table.
    Chassis Quantity Chassis Space Allocation
Quantum Scalar Key Manager (SKM) (4U) 0 or 1 U35-38
    Oracle Key Manager (OKM) (4U)
An encryption key management server is a 1U chassis. The servers are paired (a quantity of 1 means there are two servers). One server is located in U35, and the other is located in U37. When installed in a PFC, no other chassis are installed in U36 or U38.
  4. If Oracle SL500 BAR storage reference features are included, install them in the following order, using the information in the following table.
    Chassis Quantity Chassis Space Allocation
    Oracle SL500 Tape Library Base Module (8U) 0 to 1 U27-34

Install the Base Module first, then Expansion Modules, if present.

Oracle SL500 Tape Library Expansion Module (8U) 0 to 3 Install chassis from top down, starting with the first available U-space, in U19-26, U11-18, U3-10.

    Install the Base Module first.

The cabinet designated for the Oracle SL500 Base or Expansion chassis must be in its installed position within the data center before these chassis are installed. The cabinet must be ganged to another cabinet or, if the cabinet is a standalone cabinet, front stabilizers must be attached.
The Oracle SL500 has a mechanical arm that moves up and down. Therefore, the Base and Expansion units must always be adjacent to each other. Install the Base unit first.

    Chassis Quantity Chassis Space Allocation
    Quantum i500 Base Module (5U) 0 to 1 U21-25

Install the Base Module first, then Expansion Modules, if present.

Quantum i500 Expansion Module (9U) 0 to 3 Install chassis from top down, starting with the first available U-space, in U26-34, U12-20, or U3-11.

    Install the Base Module first.

The cabinet designated for the Quantum i500 Base or Expansion chassis must be in its installed position within the data center before these chassis are installed. The cabinet must be ganged to another cabinet or, if the cabinet is a standalone cabinet, front stabilizers must be attached.
The Quantum i500 has a mechanical arm that moves up and down. Therefore, the Base and Expansion units must always be adjacent to each other. Install the Base unit first.
