The following table shows the different types of MDS software components (packages) that perform different tasks and can be installed on different hardware and software environments.

Prerequisite Description
MDS Core Files The core files are the MDS executables and libraries. (On Windows systems, MetaBrowse and MetaManager are part of this package.) These files are required on all systems that run an MDS application or that are used to develop MDS applications.
In MDS 14.10, MetaBrowse and MetaManager was replaced by the Repository Explorer, but these products are still provided for your use.
MDS Development Kit The development kit contains additional files needed to develop MDS applications. MDS provides a set of application programming interfaces (APIs) for third-party applications to store, administer, and retrieve metadata from the MDS repository. The development kit also includes sample applications.

The development kit must be installed on the workstation of any user working with the MDS APIs.

The development kit files can be installed on Windows or Linux systems.

A directory of samples that show how to use the various APIs is part of the kit.

MDS DIM Update Files If you set up and use the Automatic DIM Update feature, you must install executable files for the MDS DDL Gateway and the MDS Action Processor on the system that you designate as the DIM Update server.

The DIM Update files can be installed on Windows or Linux systems.

Repository Explorer Repository Explorer replaces the functionality provided by the MDS desktop applications MetaBrowse and MetaManager and the web application MetaSurf. It allows you to perform administration tasks and search the metadata in the repository. Repository Explorer is a Java-based application and runs on Java-based web servers. It uses the web application infrastructure provided by Teradata Master Data Manager (MDM).
