The following table outlines the features and components of the 2800 platform.
Feature | Feature Description |
---|---|
Processing Node | Each 2800 base cabinet can contain two to twelve
database nodes; each expansion cabinet contains two to twelve
database nodes. Nodes consist of an Intel R1208WT chassis with:
|
Disk Storage | Each 2800 base cabinet contains one to four disk
arrays, each expansion cabinet contains one to five disk arrays. A
disk array is made up of two drive enclosures. Each disk array
consists of:
|
Full Disk Encryption |
The 2800 platform supports full disk encryption for all database node disks, storage disks, and server disks in all system cabinets. Some Teradata Managed Servers may
have database data on the TMS drives (temporarily or
permanently). Full disk encryption is offered for these Teradata
Managed Servers with self-encrypting drives (Dell R720 and
later).
Dell R710 servers do not use
self-encrypting drives (SED).
|
Operating System | SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 (SLES 11) SP1 |
Teradata Database |
Contact Teradata Customer Support to confirm the exact version of the Teradata Database and PDE
packages required for this platform. The Teradata Database can
be either of the following:
|
Software Compression | The 2800 platform uses the Teradata Database block-level software compression feature. Default block-level software compression settings are pre-configured and optimized for 2800 system-level performance. |
Channel Server | Intel R2208 or Intel R2208WT server, configured as
dedicated server for interface between Teradata Database and IBM (or
compatible) mainframe:
|
Extended Channel Solution (ECS) | Dell R720 or Dell R730 server, configured as dedicated server for remote interface between Teradata Database and IBM (or compatible) mainframe:
|
Teradata Managed Server (TMS) Teradata Multipurpose Server (TMS) |
TMSs consist of Dell R710, Dell R720, Dell R720xd,
Dell R730, or Dell R730xd servers used for solution offerings that
are peripheral to Teradata processing. All TMSs have onboard connectivity to the server management network. If sufficient BYNET V5 switch ports are available, the server can also be connected to the BYNET V5 switches. For information about TMS configurations, see the Teradata Platform Framework Cabinet Model 12 Product and Site Preparation Guide, B035-5388. |
Network Connectivity Server (NCS) | Intel R2208 or Intel R2208 WT server, configured
as dedicated server for providing additional customer network
connectivity options:
|
SAS HPA Worker Node | Dell Server configured for SAS High-Performance Analytics in-memory software. For more information, see the Teradata Appliance for SAS High-Performance Analytics Model 720 Platform Product and Site Preparation Guide, B035-5410, or the Teradata Appliance for SAS High-Performance Analytics Model 750 Platform Product and Site Preparation Guide, B035-6042. |
Dump Server | Dell R720xd server, configured as dedicated
hardware to be used for crash dump data analysis. Data can be
offloaded from the production data warehouse environment to a dump
server, allowing for analysis without disruption to the production
system. The dump server must run the same version of Teradata
Database as the production system from which the dump data was
offloaded. Each dump server consists of:
One portable USB DVD ROM drive is included
per system that uses a Dell R720xd dump server. The product ID
number for the USB DVD ROM drive kit is 2021-K944-V001. The kit
includes instructions for using the drive.

BAR Storage Hardware Data Domain products |
Storage hardware. The following are used for BAR
and installed in the field by third-party vendor personnel:
|
BAR Storage Hardware Quantum products |
Quantum Scalar i80 tape library for automated
retrieval, storage, and management of backup tape cartridges. The
i80 is available in the base cabinet. Quantum Scalar key manager servers are also available in the base processing/storage cabinet. |
BAR Storage Hardware Teradata Managed Storage Server (TMSS) (Dell R720xd) Teradata Multipurpose Storage Server (TMSS) (Dell R730xd) |
Dell R720xd or Dell R730xd server. Used as an NFS
storage target with the Appliance Backup Utility (ABU) and with the
Data Stream Utility (DSU).
All TMSSs have onboard connectivity to the server management network. They can also be connected to BYNET V5 switches. If the option to connect to a
BYNET V5 switch is used, port consumption ramifications should
be considered.
|
BYNET V5 Interconnect | Redundant BYNET V5 switches using BYNET V5
InfiniBand for processing node, channel server, and NCS
communication in processing/storage cabinets or BYNET V5 cabinets.
|
Adapters | SAS disk storage adapter:
|
Cable Modes | Teradata systems are shipped with multi-mode fiber (MMF) connections for the 10Gb Ethernet optical interface into all servers. Single-mode fiber (SMF) connections are not supported. |
Virtualized Management Server (VMS) | A virtualized management server (VMS) is an Intel
R1208 or Intel R1208WT chassis. A VMS can host the following virtual
machines (VMs):
|
Server Management Web (SMWeb) Services | Server management functions run on the CMIC VM (on a VMS). The CMIC hosts the SMWeb Services Home page and provides applications and services for server management on an MPP system:
SMWeb 11.04 and Teradata ServiceConnect are required for 2800 systems.
For information about using SMWeb Services, see the
Teradata Server Management Web Services User Guide, B035-5350, or the online help on the SMWeb Services home page. |
Multi-System Support | The server management network (domain) can support multiple systems. For each full production 2800 system, multi-system support enables the inclusion of a second 2800 system and one or two 680 systems in the 2800 base cabinet (depending on cabinet build). Contact Teradata for more information about multi-system configurations. |
Enterprise Service Workstation (SWS) | Teradata Dell R720 workstation dedicated to system
servicing and maintenance. A dedicated Enterprise SWS hardware
replaces the SWS virtual machine in the Intel R1208 or Intel R1208WT
system VMS. For systems that use dedicated Enterprise SWS hardware,
the SWS hardware resides in a Platform Framework Cabinet (PFC).
The level of service depends on the service
agreement between Teradata and the customer.
|
Enterprise Viewpoint Server | Teradata Dell R720 server that hosts the Viewpoint
portal that contains portlets for customer management of the
Teradata Database. Multi-system configurations and single systems
that have more than 128 nodes or servers require dedicated
Enterprise Viewpoint hardware (rather than a VMS with a Viewpoint
virtual machine). For systems that use dedicated Enterprise
Viewpoint hardware, the Viewpoint hardware can reside in a PFC.
|
Keyboard, Video, Mouse (KVM) Console | The KVM resides in the 2800 base processing/storage cabinet and has VGA and USB connections to the system VMS. |
Cable Management | Base and expansion cabinets are pre-wired for two
cliques, with cable harness provided for server management Ethernet
per node. BYNET V5 cabinets do not have cable harnesses. Platform Framework Cabinets have cable harnesses for power and server management. Openings in cabinet sides near the rear of the rack accommodate inter-rack cabling. |
AC Power Subsystem | 2800 base and expansion cabinets:
|
Co-residence |
The 2800 platform can co-reside with the
2700 and 2750 platforms. When creating a co-residence system, follow
these guidelines:
|
Unified Data Architecture (UDA) |
The 2800 production system and, if installed, the 2800 second system or 680 systems are UDA-capable. For more information, contact Teradata Customer Support. |
