A schema is a container that holds all the definitions of the database tables and columns in use, the dimensions in use (including hierarchies and levels), and the cubes you define using those dimensions. It also holds optional items such as named sets, level security, and localization information.

The schema name should be unique within the Teradata BI Model Repository and can be up to 100 characters in length. Spaces, underscores (_), or dashes (-) are allowed in schema names. The following punctuation and special characters are not allowed in schema names:

. , ; ' ` : / \ * | ? " & % $ ! + = ( ) [ ] { } < >

Although you cannot validate or publish an empty or partially-completed schema to the Teradata BI Model Repository, you can save the schema in XML to a .biml file on your hard drive.

  1. From the Teradata Schema Workbench main window, click File > New BI Schema.
  2. In the Name box, type a name for the new schema.
  3. Select a default language from the menu.
  4. Click File > Save. The schema status displays Saved To with the file location and the date and time saved.
