The following table outlines the features and components of the 6800 platform.
Feature | Feature Description |
---|---|
Processing Node 6800 |
Processing node types include:
Each cabinet contains one, two, or three Teradata Database nodes and one hot standby node. Teradata Database nodes consist of a Dell R730
chassis with:
|
Disk Storage 6800 Configuration |
Disk arrays: Clique configurations:
SAS storage drives:
HDD drive sizes cannot be mixed
in a 6800 system.
Hybrid (SSD
and HDD) storage drive configurations (standalone and
coexistence):
HDD-only storage drive
configurations (standalone and coexistence):
SSD-only storage drive
configurations (standalone):
|
Full Disk Encryption (FDE) | The 6800 platform supports full disk encryption for HDD and SSD disk storage drives in the database arrays. Internal processing node and server drives are not encrypted. Processing nodes use self-encrypting drives (SED). |
PE Node | PE nodes consist of either a Dell
R720 or a Dell R730 chassis, configured for parsing engine (PE)
processing only. Dell R720 PE node
configuration:
Dell R730 PE node configuration:
|
Channel Server | Channel server consists of either
a Dell R720 or a Dell R730 chassis, configured as dedicated server
for interface between the Teradata Database and IBM mainframes. Dell R720 channel server configuration:
Dell R730 channel server
configuration:
For information about HCA configuration, see the Host Channel Adapter Installation and Service Guide, B035-5044. |
Extended Channel Solution (ECS) | Dell R720 or Dell R730 server, configured as dedicated server for remote interface between Teradata Database and IBM (or compatible) mainframe:
|
Teradata Managed Server (TMS) Teradata Multipurpose Server (TMS) |
TMSs consist of Dell R710, Dell
R720, Dell R720xd, Dell R730, or Dell R730xd servers used for
solution offerings that are peripheral to Teradata processing. All TMSs have onboard connectivity to the server management network. If sufficient BYNET V5 switch ports are available, the server can also be connected to the BYNET V5 switches. For information about TMS configurations, see the Teradata Platform Framework Cabinet Model 12 Product and Site Preparation Guide, B035-5388. |
SAS HPA Worker Node | Dell Server configured for SAS High-Performance Analytics in-memory software. For more information, see the Teradata Appliance for SAS High-Performance Analytics Model 720 Platform Product and Site Preparation Guide, B035-5410, or the Teradata Appliance for SAS High-Performance Analytics Model 750 Platform Product and Site Preparation Guide, B035-6042. |
Dump Server | Dell R720xd server, configured as
dedicated hardware to be used for crash dump data analysis. Data can be offloaded from the production data warehouse environment to a dump server, allowing for analysis without disruption to the production system. The dump server must run the same version of Teradata Database as the production system from which the dump data was offloaded. Each dump server consists of:
One portable USB DVD ROM drive is
included per system to be used by a Dell R720xd dump server. The
product ID number for the USB DVD ROM drive kit is
2021-K944-V001. The kit includes instructions for using the
drive.
|
BYNET V5 Interconnect | Redundant BYNET V5 switches using
BYNET V5 InfiniBand for Teradata Database node, PE node, and channel
server communication:
|
Adapters | BYNET V5 InfiniBand adapter:
SAS disk storage adapter:
Communications adapters:
Channel server adapters:
|
Cable Modes | Teradata systems are shipped with multi-mode fiber (MMF) connections for the 10Gb Ethernet optical interface into all servers. Single-mode fiber (SMF) connections are not supported. |
Virtualized Management Server (VMS) | A virtualized management server
(VMS) is an Intel R1208 or Intel R1208WT chassis. A VMS can host the
following virtual machines (VMs):
An Intel R1208 or Intel R1208WT VMS is available
in System VMS and Cabinet VMS configurations:
Each Intel R1208 or Intel R1208WT
System VMS supports systems up to a maximum of 128 nodes and
servers in a single system, or up to a maximum of 128 disk
arrays (15 processing/storage cabinets), and consists of:
Each Intel R1208 or Intel R1208WT
Cabinet VMS consists of:
|
Server Management Web (SMWeb) Services | Server management functions run on the CMIC VM (on a VMS). The CMIC hosts the SMWeb Services Home page and provides applications and services for server management on an MPP system:
For use by customer on-site staff members, Teradata Services Analysts in the Global Support Center (GSC), and Teradata Customer Service Representatives. SMWeb 12.02 (or later) and Teradata ServiceConnect are required for 6800 systems.
For information about using SMWeb Services, see the Teradata Server Management Web Services User Guide, B035-5350, or the online help on the SMWeb Services home page. |
Enterprise Service Workstation (SWS) | Teradata Dell R730 workstation
dedicated to system servicing and maintenance. Systems with an Intel
R1208 or Intel R1208WT System VMS and more than 128 disk arrays, or
multi-system configurations, require dedicated Enterprise SWS
hardware (rather than a VMS with an SWS virtual machine). For
systems that use dedicated Enterprise SWS hardware, the SWS hardware
resides in a Platform Framework Cabinet.
The level of service depends on the
service agreement between Teradata and the
customer.
|
Enterprise Viewpoint Server | Teradata Dell R720 server that
hosts the Viewpoint portal that contains portlets for customer
management of the Teradata Database. Multi-system configurations and
single systems that have more than 128 nodes or servers require
dedicated Enterprise Viewpoint hardware (rather than a VMS with a
Viewpoint virtual machine). For systems that use dedicated
Enterprise Viewpoint hardware, the Viewpoint hardware can reside in
a Platform Framework Cabinet.
|
Keyboard, Video, Mouse (KVM) Console | If the system has a VMS in a Teradata Managed Server cabinet or BYNET V5 cabinet, the KVM resides in the Platform Framework Cabinet or BYNET V5 cabinet and has VGA and USB connections to the VMS. For all other configurations, the KVM resides in the 6800 cabinet. |
High Availability | Package feature includes:
|
Cable Management | Processing/storage cabinets are
pre-wired for one clique, with cable harness provided for server
management Ethernet per node. BYNET V5 cabinets do not have cable harnesses. Platform Framework Cabinets have cable harnesses for power, server management, and BAR. Openings in cabinet sides near the rear of the rack accommodate inter-rack cabling. |
AC Power Subsystem | 6800 processing/storage cabinets:
BYNET V5 cabinet:
The PFC cabinet has two AC boxes of the same type per cabinet. For information about the PFC cabinet power subsystem, see the Teradata Platform Framework Cabinet Model 12 Product and Site Preparation Guide, B035-5388. |
