The following rules apply to character strings.

| ANSI | Truncate trailing pad character spaces to achieve the desired length. Truncation of other characters, or part of a multibyte character, returns an error. |
| Teradata | Truncate trailing characters to achieve the desired length. Truncation on Kanji1 character data types containing multiple-byte characters may cause truncating one byte of the multibyte character. |
