Server Character Sets

LATIN, UNICODE, KANJISJIS, KANJI1, and GRAPHIC server character sets are mutually assignable.

Consider an assignment of an expression to a character string column. The assignment may be the result of the SQL UPDATE or INSERT statement or Load utility assignment.

The expression is converted to the server character set of the character column.

Exceptions to GRAPHIC Data

The following exceptions apply to GRAPHIC data:
  • When you assign imported GRAPHIC data to a character column, that column must be defined as GRAPHIC.
  • You cannot assign imported character data that is not GRAPHIC to a column defined as GRAPHIC.

For more information, see the documentation on the USING row descriptor in CHARACTER and GRAPHIC Server Character Set Limitations for INSERT Operations.

  • You cannot assign non-GRAPHIC data to a GRAPHIC column from BTEQ or load utilities.
  • You cannot assign or export GRAPHIC data from a single byte character set like ASCII or EBCDIC.
